1 gallon cucumbers
1 cup plain salt
1/2 gallon boiling water
2 tablespoons alum
1/2 gallon boiling water
8 cups sugar
1 1/2 quarts vinegar
Pickling Spice

Directions:
Directions:
Slice cucumbers thin and put in a glass gallon jug. Cover with the boiling water. Let stand one week.
Drain off the water. Replace with more boiling water and the alum. Drain off the water again.
Make syrup using the sugar, vinegar, and spices, and pour on the pickles for 3 mornings. Drain syrup and heat. Return to pickles. On the 4th day, put pickles into jars and seal.

Since these instructions are unclear, here are the ones that accompany another recipe online:

DIRECTIONS
Combine cucumbers, water and walt in a large pan; heat to boiling, to dissolve salt.
Pour over cucumbers and let set on counter for 7 days. (Use plastic or glass containers.).
On the eighth day drain and cover with plain water in same container.
On ninth day drain and cover with alum and boiling water.
On the tenth day drain and cover with boiling water; cool and drain.
Cover with vinegar, sugar, and pickling spice that has been heated to boiling; let set on counter.
For next four days drain syrup into pan and add 1 cup more sugar.
On the 14th day you can process pickles by canning or keep in the refrigerator indefinitely (years).

These are the classic pickles made family-famous by Burma Stewart Davis and Opha Stewart Vinson. Opha got the recipe originally from friend Kathleen Kilgro, who also used to do substitute receptionist work at the office of Dr. Laurence D. Vinson, Sr.
