French Onion Soup Recipe

1/4 cup butter
3 large onions thinly sliced
1 large sprig of fresh thyme
1 sprig of parsley
1 bay leaf
4 1/2 cups beef broth
1/4 cup dry white wine
1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp ground black pepper
4 slices of french bread, toasted
1 1/4 cups shredded Gruyere or Swiss cheese

Directions:
Directions:
Heat a Dutch oven to med-low heat. Add butter and stir in onions. Cook covered, 13-15 minutes or until tender. Uncover; cook and stir over med-high heat for 3-5 minutes until onions are golden.
Add the herbs to onions along with beef broth, wine,Worcestershire sauce and pepper. Bring to a boil; reduce heat. Simmer, covered for 15 minutes.
Meanwhile place toasted bread on baking sheet; sprinkle with 3/4 cup of shredded cheese. Broil for 1-2 minutes until cheese melts and turns light brown.
Remove the herbs before serving.
To serve, ladle soup into bowls and float bread on top and sprinkle with remaining cheese, if desired.
