1 - 8 oz. package macaroni (2 cups)
1 - 19 oz. can (or 2 ½ cups fresh, chopped) tomatoes, chopped
1 teaspoon sugar
½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon salt
Few grains of pepper
1 bay leaf, dash basil
½ lb. cheddar cheese
¼ lb. sliced ham, cut in 1-inch squares (more or less, according to your taste)

Cook macaroni in lightly salted water for about 8 to 10 minutes - check package. Pasta needs to boil while it cooks.

In a separate saucepan, combine ham, tomatoes, sugar, W. sauce, salt, pepper, bay leaf; heat.

Cube cheese.

Alternate layers of macaroni, tomatoes, and cheese in greased baking dish.

Cover and bake at 350o F, 15 min if the mixture is still hot. If it has cooled, bake 30 minutes.

Vegetarians can easily substitute the ham with any number of things such as beans, TVP, or a vegetable such as steamed cauliflower. You may have to add more salt as ham is typically very salty.

Compared to Kraft Dinner and most other Mac and Cheese recipes, this calls for less cheese making it a lower fat (not low fat though!) option. Consider using whole grain pasta too and feel really good about this meal.
