1 C. Butter
2-1/2 C. Brown Sugar, packed
1 C. Light Corn Syrup
14 oz. can Sweetened Condensed Milk
1-1/2 tsp. Vanilla Extract

*Variation: For Chocolate caramels add 1/3 C. Baking Cocoa to the condensed milk, before adding the condensed milk in the recipe.

Melt butter in a large, heavy saucepan. Add sugar and corn syrup, mix well. Cook over medium heat until sugar is dissolved and well blended, stir in milk. Continue cooking over medium heat, stirring constantly until candy thermometer reaches 240º (Soft Ball Stage). Remove from heat and stir in Vanilla Extract.
Pour into a greased 9" x 13" pan. Refrigerate until set. With a thin blade knife, cut into strips and roll in log shape. Cut each log into pieces and wrap in wax paper or candy papers.
