Cake:
2 c. sugar
Pinch of salt
1/2 c. shortening
2 eggs
1/2 c. cocoa
1/2 c. boiling water
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. milk
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
Filling:
1 c. milk
1/2 c. chopped dates
1 egg, beaten
1 T. flour
1/4 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
Frosting:
1 (1-oz.) square unsweetened chocolate
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/4 c. water
3 T. butter
1 tsp. vanilla
Pinch of salt
1 1/2 c. powdered sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Cake: Cream sugar, salt, shortening and eggs. Pour boiling water into cocoa and stir until smooth. Add baking soda to cocoa mixture and stir. Add cocoa mixture to sugar mixture. Mix in milk, vanilla, flour, and baking powder. Bake at 350º for 30-35 minutes in a 9x13-inch pan. Cool and split cake into 2 layers.
Filling: Combine all ingredients in sauce pan and cook over low heat until it starts to bubble and thicken. Stir often. Cool and spread between cake layers.
Frosting: Heat unsweetened chocolate, sugar, and water until boiling. Simmer for 4 minutes. Remove from heat. Add remaining ingredients and mix. Adjust amount powdered sugar for spreading consistency.

Myra made this as a birthday cake for several of her boys every year. They like to eat it in a bowl with milk poured over the top.
