4 cups flour 2 eggs
4 tsp baking powder 2 Tbsp melted butter
1/2 tsp salt 1 cup milk
1 cup sugar 1 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp nutmeg

Directions:
Directions:
Sift flour, baking powder, nutmeg and salt. Sift several times. add sugar and vanilla gradually to well beaten eggs. add melted butter. Add flour and milk alternately.Chill dough thoroughly. Roll out dough 1/3 inch thick on floured surface. Cut with a doughnut cutter and fry in hot deep fat at 385º until golden brown. Drain on unglazed paper. Roll in sugar.

These were a special treat. She would make them hot for breakfast or an afternoon treat.I can still picture her with cut out doughnuts laying on a dish towel waiting to be fried. As she took them out of the fryer there was usually someone waiting for it too cool enough so they could eat it. Our usual breakfast was oatmeal,cold cereal, eggs fried with bits of ham or bacon, French toast or pancakes.She also served home canned peaches, applesauce, blackberries or rhubarb sauce.
