Directions: |
Directions:Scald milk until bubbles form around edge. Remove from heat. Add sugar and salt. Stir until dissolved. Stir in half-and-half, vanilla and whipping cream. Cover and refrigerate 30 minutes. Pour into chilled canister.
Variation: I don't scald the milk. I pour all the ingredients into the canister and plug in the ice cream maker. However, make sure all liquids are very cold. I have never had poor results from skipping the scalding part.
Vanilla Variations: Strawberry: Add 6 cups pureed strawberries to recipe. Chill mixture before freezing. Peach: Add 6 cups pureed peaches to recipe. Chill mixture before freezing. Cookie Deluxe: Add crumbled Oreo's (or any cookie) to mixture during the last 5 to 10 minutes of mixing (30 cookies for a 6 quart recipe) Candy Supreme: Add your favorite chocolate candy during the last 5 to 10 minutes of mixing. (2 cups for 6 quart recipe) |

Notes: Old fashioned, hand cranked ice cream stirs up memories of days gone by. I remember my grandpa and my dad cranking the handle while I sat on top of the bucket to keep it from toppling over. My boys have grown up enjoying homemade ice cream since they were toddlers. It is a special and treasured family tradition on a hot summer day.
