1/2 c. butter or margarine
1 c. sugar
1/4 c. molasses
2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 tsp. ground cloves
1 tsp. ground ginger
2 c. all-purpose flour

Directions:
In a mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar. Add egg and molasses; beat well. Sift together dry ingredients; gradually add to creamed mixture. Mix well. Chill the dough. Roll into 1-1/4-in. balls and dip into sugar. Place 2 in. apart on ungreased cookie sheets.

Bake at 375º for 8 - 10 minutes or until set and surface cracks. Cool on wire racks.

To keep soft, store in container or plastic bag with bread end crusts.
