2 c. sugar
3 eggs
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 lb. margarine
2 c. plain flour
1 tsp. baking soda
4 Tbsp. cocoa (melt cocoa in 1/2 c. hot water)

Directions:
Directions:
Cream butter & sugar. Add eggs & beat until well mixed. Sift together flour and baking soda. Add vanilla to milk. Add flour, milk & chocolate mixture alternately to the creamed mixture, beginning & ending with flour. Mix until just blended. Pour into 3, 8" or 9" greased & floured pans. Bake at 350º for 30 minutes or until done. Remove from pans, cool & frost.

Brownstone Front Frosting:
2 1/2 c. sugar
1 c. evaporated milk
1/2 lb. butter (no substitutions)
1/8 tsp. salt (or less)
1 tsp. vanilla

Cook all ingredients in a heavy saucepan over low until thick (soft ball stage). Beat until creamy. Frost top & sides of cake.
