1/2 c. shortening
2 T. cocoa
1 egg
1 1/2 c. flour
1 c. sour milk (1 T. cider vinegar plus 1 c. milk)
1 T. baking soda

Frosting:
1 c. sugar
1/3 c. water
1/4 tsp. cornstarch
1 T. white corn syrup
2 egg whites
vanilla

There were no directions on this hand written recipe of Moms but these are from a similar recipe:
Sift sugar and cocoa together, add butter and cream. Add egg and beat again. Add flour and liquid alternately. Add vanilla. Bake at 350º.
Frosting; Cook sugar, cornstarch and water till dissolved. Add to egg whites and beat well.
