1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup sugar
1 1/2 sticks cold unsalted butter, cut into bits
1 1/3 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
1/2 cups dried currants
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 large egg, beaten lightly for tops

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and sugar. Add butter bits and blend until mixture resembles course meal. Stir in rolled oats, currants and buttermilk until dough is sticky, but manageable. On a floured surface knead dough gently 6 times and roll out into a 1-inch thick round. Cut with a 3" round cutter dipped in flour. Place rounds on lightly greased baking sheet. Gather scraps into a ball and re-roll dough and cut until used. Brush tops of scones with egg whites. Bake in middle of oven 20 minutes or until golden. Makes about 12 scones.
