1/4 c. butter
1/2 c. sugar
1 c. flour
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 egg
1/3 c. milk
1/2 tsp. vanilla
Fresh strawberries, stemmed, crushed and sweetened to taste
Whipped cream

Directions:
Directions:
Cream butter and sugar. Add egg. Alternately add dry ingredients and milk; stir in vanilla. Bake in a 9-inch square pan, 350º, 20-25 minutes or until cake center springs back when lightly touched. Cool. Carefully split each serving of cake into two layers. Spoon crushed berries between halves. Serve topped with whipped cream and whole berries.

Mom always mashed the strawberries and then mixed the cream with them. She put the mixture between and on top of the split cake. We always had this when we picked strawberries.
