1 1/4 cups hot water (about 110 degrees)
1/2 cup sugar
3 pkgs. dry yeast
1 beaten egg
1/3 cup melted butter
4 cups flour
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. ground cardamom

for topping:
1 egg slightly beaten
chopped walnuts
sugar

In a large bowl, add 1/2 cup sugar to hot water and stir.
(water temp. should be about 110 degrees-check with meat thermometer)
Sprinkle yeast on top, wait 5 minutes for mixture to start to foam. (proofing the yeast)
If this does not happen, start over.
Add melted butter, salt, beaten egg, and cardamom, and stir well.
Gradually add flour, mixing and kneading to make a smooth dough. Round up and place in a greased bowl. Cover and set in a warm place to rise until double in size. (1 1/2 to 2 hours).
Punch down, divide in two equal parts.
On lightly floured surface, divide each half into three parts, roll into strips and braid, tuck ends under.
Place each braid in greased loaf pan, cover, and let rise until double. (about 1/2 hour)
Brush with egg, sprinkle with nuts and sugar.

Bake at 350º 30-40 min. until golden brown.
