2 C brown sugar
2 C hot water
2 tsp lard (solid vegetable shortening works - like Crisco)
1 pkg raisins
1 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp cloves

Directions:

Mix all ingredients together, and boil for five minutes (after the mixture begins to bubble)
Wait until the mixture is COLD, then add 3 C flour & 1 tsp soda (dissolved in a couple tsp hot water). Bake in a greased tube pan 350-375º for about an hour

This recipe came from my mother's recipe box, includes a note in her handwriting "Made this when I was in high school, 1918 cooking class". I've never tried it.
