Cake:
12 egg whites
1 & 1/2 cup buttermilk
4 & 1/2 sifted plain flour
3 cups sugar
1 & 1/2 cups butter
2 level teaspoons soda
pinch of salt
2 teaspoons vanilla flavoring
Filling:
12 egg yolks
1 & 1/2 cup butter
2 & 1/2 cups sugar
1 & 1/2 cup grape juice or orange juice or sweet blackberry wine.
1 cup finely chopped nuts
2 cans coconut
1 & 1/2 cup chopped raisins
1 teaspoon vanilla flavoring

Cake: Sift flour before measuring. Cream sugar and butter. Add flour and milk, salt and soda. Add vanilla. Beat egg whites until stiff and fold into batter. Divide butter between 4 prepared cake pans. Bake at 350º for 30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Filling: Cook egg yolks, butter, sugar, and juice or wine until thick. Add the nuts, coconut, raisins and vanilla. Cover and cool to room temperature. When cooled, spread on cake.
