1 c. shortening or butter
1 2/3 c. sugar
5 eggs
2 c. sifted cake flour
1 tsp. salt
Dash of mace or grated orange peel or both
1/4 tsp. baking powder
3 Tbsp. milk
1 tsp. vanilla or lemon extract

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating thoroughly with electric beater. Sift dry ingredients three times; add to creamed mixture. Add milk & extract; mix well. Pour into prepared tube pan. Preheat oven to 350º; reduce heat to 275º as you put cake into oven. Bake for 1 hour. Remove from oven; cool in pan for 15 minutes. Turn onto rack or plate with crunchy top side up.

Glaze:
1 1/4 c. sifted powdered sugar
2 Tbsp. melted butter
1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
1 1/2 - 2 Tbsp. milk
Combine powdered sugar, butter, vanilla & milk. Beat until smooth. Pour over cake.
