1 cup butter or margarine, softened
2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup milk
3 cups sifted cake flour
2-3/4 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
6 egg whites

Directions:
Directions:
Cream butter; gradually add sugar, beating well at medium speed on mixer. Combine water and milk in a small bowl; set aside.

Combine flour, baking powder, and salt; add to creamed mixture alternately with milk mixture, beginning and ending with the flour. Mix until just blended after each addition. Stir in almond extract.

Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form; fold into batter. Pour into 3 greased and floured 9-inch round cakepans. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes. Cool in pans 10 minutes. Remove from pans and let cool completely

Frost with 7-Minute Boiled Frosting .

This is a very old cake recipe, from 1906, that my Mother made several times a year. It is very light in texture and delicious.
