2 c. Brown Sugar - Firmly Packed
2/3 c. Butter
2 Eggs
1 tsp. Vanilla
1/2 tsp. Salt
1/2 c. Cocoa - In 1/2 c. Boiling Water
1 c. Butter Milk
1 Large tsp. Soda - Diluted In the Butter Milk
3 c. Flour

Directions:

Cream together the brown sugar and the butter.

Add the eggs one (1) at a time and cream together until light and fluffy.

Add the Vanilla and salt. Cool the water/cocoa mixture and add to creamed mixture.

Add the one (1) cup butter milk, with the soda, alternately with the three (3) cups flour.

This makes a three (3) layer 8 inch cake.

Bake at 350º F. for 20 to 25 minutes until done (when a toothpick is inserted and comes out clean).

Grandma wrote on her recipe care; "very, very good".

Her recipe calls for substituting coffee for the 1/2 cup of boiling water in which the cocoa is diluted.

We don't have Grandma's frosting recipe so I am adding a recipe for Butter Cream frosting.
