Beemy (Okra)
1 bag frozen okra (thawed)
1 medium onion
1 tbsp. shortening
2 tbsp. vegetable oil
3 cloves crushed garlic
1 can tomato paste
2 tbsp. fresh cilantro, chopped
¼ cup lemon juice
½ lb. London broil (cut in cubes and browned)
½ tsp. salt
½ tsp. allspice
½ tsp. pepper

Riz (rice)
½ cup thin and short noodles
1 tbsp. shortening
2 cups rice
2 to 3 cups water
¼ tsp. salt

Fry okra in vegetable oil.

Sauté onion in shortening. Add meat. Add garlic, cilantro, salt, pepper and allspice. Cook until meat is no longer pink. Add tomato paste and 2 cups water. Stir well. Add okra and lemon juice.

To cook the rice, sauté noodles in shortening. Add rice and ½ tsp. salt. Add 2 cups water. When mixture boils, reduce heat and cook on low for about 10 minutes.

Put rice in plate. Add okra. Serve hot.

Well, I must confess that I do not like this dish because I am not a fan of okra. But, most other people seem to love it.

When we were younger, the okra my mother used was large and fuzzy. The one she uses now is small and much more tasty (but I still hate this meal). This is another meal that can be eaten like a stew and does not need other dishes to supplement it.
