1 c. sifted all-purpose flour, 1/2 tsp. salt, 1/4 tsp. baking soda, 1/2 c. shortening, 1/2 c. granulated sugar, 1 tsp. grated lemon rind, 2 eggs separated, 1 1/2 c. apricot jam, 1/4 c. sugar, 1/2 c. chopped walnuts.

Heat oven to 350º. Grease 12x9x2 baking dish. Sift together flour, salt, and baking soda. Cream shortening with 1/2 c. sugar and lemon rind until light and fluffy. Add egg yolks, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add flour mixture and mix well. Pat dough in even layer over bottom of baking dish. Cover with apricot jam. Beat egg whites till forming moist peaks; gradually add 1/4 cup sugar and beat until stiff. Fold in nuts. Spread meringue over jam. Bake 35 min. Cool and cut into sticks.
