1 cup butter
3/4 cups sifted confectioner's sugar
1 tsp vanilla
2 cups sifted flour
1/2 tsp salt

Frosting:

3 cups powdered sugar
1/2 cup butter softened
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
About 2 tbsp milk or to desired consistency

Preheat oven to 300º. Cream together butter, sugar, and vanilla. Gently stir in flour mixed with salt. Chill. (Use 1 tsp salt if using unsalted butter)

Roll 1/2" thick on floured surface. Cut into desire shapes. (Dough can also be shaped into a roll, chilled and sliced 1/2" thick)

Bake on ungreased cookie sheet 20-25 minutes or until cookies are dry but are not brown. Cool on a rack.

Frosting: Whip butter, add sugar, vanilla, and milk. Add more milk if needed.

Alternative: For a change, melt 1 cup chocolate chips. Stir in 1 tsp Crisco shortening. Dip one end of each cookie into chocolate. If you like nuts, then dip into nuts or sprinkles for a festive look. Or, just drizzle chocolate over cookie.
