1-1/2 c. Sugar
1-1/2 c. Water
1/4 t. Cinnamon
1/4 t. Nutmeg
6-10 drops Red Food Coloring
3 T. Butter
2 c. Sifted Flour
2 t. Baking Power
1t. Salt
1.3 c. Shortening
1/2 c. Milk
6 Medium Whole Apples, Pared and Cored

Combine sugar, water, spices and food coloring. Bring to boiling and remove from heat, add butter. Sift together dry ingredients, cut in shorting until mixture resembles course crumbs. Add milk all at once and stir just until flour moistened. On lightly floured surface, roll pastry about 1/4 inch thick into a 8x12 rectangle. Cut into 6 inch squares or use half an apple (sliced) per square. Sprinkle generously with sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg, dot with butter. Moisten edges of squares. Fold in corners to center and pinch edges together. Place 1 inch apart in ungreased pan. Pour the syrup over dumplings, sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 375º for 35 minutes or until apples are done. Serve warm.
