1 bar (4 oz.) Ghirardelli semi-sweet chocolate
1/2 cup water
1 cup butter
2 cups sugar
4 yolks from large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups unsifted flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup buttermilk or strong cold coffee
4 egg whites
1/2 teaspoon salt

Directions:
Directions:
Place chocolate and water in heavy saucepan. Melt over low heat. Set aside. Cream butter and sugar in mixing bowl. Add egg yolks one at a time. Mix in chocolate mixture and vanilla. Sift together flour and soda and add alternately to chocolate mixture with buttermilk or cold coffee. Mix until smooth. Beat egg whites and salt until very stiff peaks form. Fold into batter.
Spread into three 8 or 9 inch round cake pans lined with wax paper. Bake at 350 degrees about 30 minutes.
Cool on rack 10 minutes; remove cake and frost.
