1 cup raisins
1 cup water
3/4 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. cloves
2 cups oatmeal
1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Simmer raisins and water over medium heat until raisins are plump. Saving the liquid, drain raisins. Save 1/2 cup of the liquid, set aside. Mix shortening, sugar, eggs, & vanilla thoroughly. Stir in saved liquid. Blend in remaining ingredients. Drop spoonfuls about 2" apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 400ºF for 8-10 minutes or until lightly browned.
