1 cup heavy cream
5 squares Bakers unsweetened chocolate
1/2 cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions:

Combine sugar with cream in a heavy saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Reduce heat and simmer for 6 minutes without stirring. Remove from heat then add chocolate and stir to blend. Stir in butter and vanilla then chill until thickened. Beat until creamy.

This recipe is from an ancient note card written by my grandmother. I had to dig into my archives for this. It’s probably on the back of every Bakers chocolate box, but this is the reliable frosting that my grandmother made that began my lifelong love affair with cake. She would frost a yellow cake made from scratch with this frosting. As she aged, the yellow cake got a little funny, but the frosting was always the best.
