1 qt. (2 cans) sliced pears with juice
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 c. sugar
1 lemon, juice and zest
2 c. bread crumbs
2 tbsp. butter, melted
Vanilla Sauce:
1/2 c. sugar
1/8 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. corn starch
1 c. boiling water
2 tbsp. butter
1 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
In a medium pan, combine the sliced pears, sugar and spices. Cook for 5 min. Add the juice and zest of the lemon.
Butter the crumbs. Arrange a layer of crumbs in a buttered 8 x 8 inch baking dish. Spread with the fruit mixture, top with crumbs. Bake in 350ºF until well browned (about 15-20 min.)
Serve with cream or Vanilla Sauce
Vanilla Sauce - Combine the cornstarch, sugar and salt, mix thoroughly. Gradually add the boiling water. Bring to the boiling point and boil 5 min. Add butter and vanilla. Serve hot.

I have this recipe on a 3x5 card that my Aunt Theda Stunkel wrote out for me. I treasure this little card because of her handwriting on it. And the vanilla sauce is wonderful!!
