Between the months of June and November, hurricanes and tropical storms are very common. Hurricanes and tropical storms are formed when several different winds exceeding 74 mph, originating in the tropical regions of the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea or the Gulf of Mexico. A tropical storm is a lesser form of a hurricane.

Important medical, family contact and insurance information
Water, 2 week supply at home, 3 day if evacuating or 1 gallon per person per day.
Food, 2 week supply at home, 3 day supply if evacuating
Non-electric can opener
Battery powered radio
Flashlights
Extra batteries
Two week supply of prescription medication & list of dosages and allergies.
Mosquito repellent
First aid kit
Water purification kit (tablets, plain chlorine and iodine)
Pre-moistened towelettes
Antibacterial wipes/hand sanitizer
Walker, wheelchair and other medical equipment (talk to medical equipment company prior to determine needs for battery or electric powered devices, register with the power company if electricity required for oxygen or special needs)

If you evacuate, also take:
Bedding
Extra clothing and shoes
Eyeglasses
Folding chair or cot
Extra hearing aid batteries
Walker, wheelchair and other medical equipment
Important papers (in a waterproof container)
Driver's license
Special medical information
Medical insurance and Medicare cards
Insurance policies
Family and physician contact numbers
List of style and serial numbers of medical devices, i.e. pacemaker

Precious commodities before and after a storm:
Cash
Ice
Charcoal
Wooden matches
Grill
Fill car's gas tank

Disaster Preparedness Pet Checklist:

Before a disaster-
Make sure your pet has current vaccinations. Shelters may require proof.
Have a current photo of your pet
Keep a collar wit identification
Have a leash on hand
Have a proper size pet carrier
Remember, specialized pet shelters, animal control shelters, veterinary clinics and friends and relatives out of harm's way are all potential refuges for your pet during a disaster.
Pet shelters will fill on a first come first serve basis. Call ahead to determine availability.

All pets brought to a shelter require the following:
Proper identification collar
Rabies Tag
Proper identification on all belongings
Carrier or cage
Leash
Ample supply of food and water
Food and water bowls
Necessary medications
News papers and trash bags for clean up

Keeping pets at home:
Bring pet indoor well in advance of storm
Walk pets on leash until they become re-oriented to their home after a disaster.
If pets cannot be found, contact the local animal control office to find where lost animals can be recovered. Bring along a picture of possible
After a disaster, animals can become aggravated or defensive, monitor their behavior.
