2 2/3 c. flour
3 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
2/3 c. shortening
1 1/4 c. sugar
1 c. milk
1 tsp. vanilla
5 egg whites
1/2 c. sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Cream the shortening and 1 1/4 cups sugar. Add alternately 1 cup milk and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Beat 5 egg whites until foamy. Add 1/2 cup sugar. Stir egg whites into dough gently. Mix well. Continue to beat to soft peak stage. Add nuts as desired. Bake at 350º for 30 minutes or until checked with toothpick.
