Directions:
Cream butter and sugar. Combine dry ingredients. Add eggs one at a time, scrape bowl. Add vanilla and bourbon. Mix. Add flour til cookie dough consistency - may use less than 5.5 cups. Divide into four. Put on cookie sheet, shape into rectangle to length of cookie sheet, about 6 inches wide, slightly higher in the middle. It should be about 1/4 inch high on sides and 1/2 inch in middle, sloping gradually. Cook in 350º oven for about 15 minutes. It is very important the "high" spine of the dough rectangle is done, test with finger to make sure it springs up lightly. Cool 10-15 minutes. Slice crosswise about 3/4 " wide cookies. Lay flat on cookie sheet bake 10 minutes then flip and bake on the other side. Dip in melted chocolate if desired.

Personal Notes:
The star anise used for this is specialty item. Must be star anise, ground, probably Penzeys is the place to special order. It definitely give the cookies a unique flavor. This is a specialty dish made for holidays and gifts. It takes several hours.
