My mother, Elizabeth Edge, had mostly hand written recipes that she worked from. You can tell all the favorites because they are splotched with drops of vanilla and splatters of cooking liquids. I love to look at her handwriting and imagine her voice saying those savory words: "squeeze the juice from two oranges and grate in the rind," or "top the fresh spinach with crunchy radish circles, chopped eggs and crisp bacon".

Elizabeth also had a wonderful habit of writing down the menus she created for special occasions. You will find many of the items on her menus appear in this cookbook. I wanted to include these menus because they are close to my heart and I wanted other cooks to have new ideas for pulling together a dinner party, which just had to be one of my mother's favorite things. Because of her, dinner parties are one of my favorite things as well. And yes, sometimes I write down the menu and slip it into my recipe folder!
