1 T softened butter

Pastry:
4 C all-purpose flour
⅛ tsp salt
1 ½ C lard (chilled and cut in ¼ inch bits)
8-10 T ice water

Filling:
1 C coarsely chopped rutabagas (cooked)
2 C finely diced lean beef (cooked)
1 C chopped cooked onions
2 C diced cooked potatoes
1 ½ tsp salt
1 tsp ground black pepper
1 egg, lightly beaten

Directions:
Directions:
Roll and cut pastry into 6-inch rounds. Put ¼ cup filling in center and fold over. Seal with water and press with fork. Brush with beaten egg and bake until lightly brown, 400º for 15 minutes, then lower temperature to 350º for 30 minutes. Yields 16 six-inch pasties.
