1/2 cup plain flour
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
2 lbs beef stew meat, cut into 1-inch pieces
2 tbsp shortening
6 c beef broth
3 pared potatoes, cut up
4 carrots, cut up
1 cup celery, cut up
2 onions, cut up
1 bay leaf
1 c red cooking wine

Directions:
Directions:
Mix flour, 1 tsp salt and the pepper. Coat meat with flour mixture. Melt shortening in large skillet; brown meat thoroughly..
Add broth; heat to boiling. Add red wine. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 2 hours. Add remaining ingredients. simmer for 30 minutes or until vegetables are tender.
If desired, thicken stew. In covered small jar, shake 1 c water and 2-4 tbsp flour until blended. Stir in stew; heat to boiling, stirring constantly. Boil for 1 minute.
