1/2 C. Shortening or butter
1 3/4 C. Sugar
1 tsp. Vanilla
3 eggs, separated
2 1/2 C. Sifted flour
1/2 C. Cocoa ( dry)
1 1/2 tsp. Soda
1 tsp. Salt
1 1/3 C. Cold water
1 C. Sour cream if desired

Cream shortening or butter & 1 cup of the sugar til light. Add
Vanilla and egg yolks, one at a time, beating well after each. Sift dry ingredients together; add to creamed mixture alternating with cold water, beating after each addition. Beat egg whites till soft peaks form; gradually add 3/4 cup sugar, beating into soft peaks. Fold into batter; blend well.
Bake in two greased and floured 1 1/2 x 9 round pans or 1 tube pan.bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes.

Mom would make this cake quite often and I loved it. She would ice it with orange flavored chocolate frosting. I used to make my own milk chocolate frosting, but any more I buy it already made.
