"As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy, and to make plans."--Ernest Hemingway

1/4 teaspoon salt

Directions:
Preheat oven to 400º. Cream shortening and sugar together until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time beating until light. Add soda, cream of tartar, and salt into flour, adding and mixing with the shortening, sugar and egg mixture. Knead by hand until smooth. Roll into walnut size balls then dip and coat each ball with the cinnamon mixed with sugar in a small bowl. Place balls on lightly greased cookie sheet 2-3 inches apart. Bake for 8-10 minutes at 400º. Cool slightly and transfer to cooling racks to cool completely. This cookie will flatten and form crinkles on the top. A family favorite. Great with hot tea or a glass of cold milk.

Personal Notes:
My Dad loved these and learned to make them himself. We sent him some when he was overseas during the Viet-Nam war. A great recipe that's simple enough for children to make!
