Over a hundred year-old recipe.

4 1/3 cups flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 tsp. ginger
3/4 tsp. cloves
3/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. allspice
3/4 cup shortening
3/4 cup sugar
1 cup molasses
1 tbsp. rum extract
1/3 cup water

Directions:

Mix and sift dry ingredients. Cream shortening and sugar. Add molasses and rum. Beat well. Add flour mixture alternately with water. Beat well each time. Wrap in tin foil and chill overnight.

Roll out 1/2 at a time to 1/4" thick. Cut with a 4" cookie cutter. Bake at 375º for 8-10 minutes. Do not brown edges! Cool. Store in airtight cookie jar.

Serve with Hawaiian Punch; 3 cups cold tea and 1 can frozen lemonade.
