1/2 cup Crisco
1 ounce red food coloring
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 eggs
1 cup buttermilk
2 1/2 cups cake flour
3 tablespoons Hershey's cocoa
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 tablespoon vinegar

Red Velvet Cake Frosting:
1 cup milk
5 tablespoons flour
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 cup Crisco
1 cup sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla
Coconut (optional)

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350°. Grease and flour two 9 inch cake pans or three 8" cake pans. Cream until smooth sugar, Crisco, eggs, food coloring and vanilla. Add sifted flour, cocoa, and salt alternately with buttermilk. Just before adding the cake mixture, mix the vinegar and soda together and stir into cake. Do not over-stir. Bake until toothpick comes out clean.

Frosting: Cook milk, flour and vanilla together until it forms a smooth paste. Be sure there are no lumps. Cool completely before adding rest of ingredients. Beat Crisco, sugar and vanilla until fluffy. Add cooled milk mixture and beat 20 minutes. Frost cake and add coconut if you wish.

Onieta said not to be afraid to use the flour in the frosting. She said this is the best cake ever.
