Ingredients:  
Combine the following four ingredients and cook until thick. Set aside to cool.

1/2 # dates, chopped
1/2 C sugar
2 T flour
1/2 C hot water

Dough:

1 C shortening (part butter, if desired)
1 1/2 C brown sugar
3 eggs
1 1/2 t vanilla
1 1/2 t baking soda dissolved in 4 1/2 T hot water
1/2 t salt
2 1/2 C flour
3/4 C nuts, chopped

25 pieces of orange slice candy, cut into thirds lengthwise

Directions:

Cream shortening, brown sugar, eggs, salt and vanilla. Add the baking soda mixture. Add the flour and nuts and mix until ingredients are combined.

Pat 1/2 of the dough into a greased and floured 9 x 13 baking pan. Spread the date mixture over the top of dough. Top with the orange slice candies with the flat side down. Top with the remaining dough. Bake at 350º for 45 minutes. Sprinkle with powdered sugar. Cool before cutting into bars.
