"As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy, and to make plans."--Ernest Hemingway

Personal Notes:
I have made this Party Mix for Christmas for years. My kids love it. I pack it in large baggies, and I usually make a double recipe, using one of the big disposable turkey roasting pans.

Memories: When Peggy and Doug were teenagers, Daddy told them that if they would dig out the basement under the house, they could go to all the ball games and Doug could take the car. We always had a nice car, because Daddy would go trade every time he got on a big drunk. Sometimes they were clunkers; sometimes they were nice new cars. We woke up to an Edsel in the driveway once. They spent all summer under the house, digging out dirt by hand and hauling it in a wheelbarrow. They dug out two rooms by the end of summer, but Daddy decided he wasn't going to let him have the car after all. Mother intervened and told him he had promised and he was going to live up to it. It sometimes took some "discussing" but Mother always had the last word. They got the car and saw the ball games. The space under Mom's house now was dug out by Peggy and Doug - with a pick, a shovel, and a wheelbarrow. I watched.
