1 cup chopped dates
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup chopped nuts
1/2 cup butter
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla
2 eggs
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp soda
1/2 tsp salt

Directions:
Directions:
Combine dates, water and granulated sugar in saucepan. Cook until thick. Add nuts and set aside. Cream shortening, sugar, vanilla, and eggs. Sift together flour, salt and soda. Blend with shortening mixture. Roll dough into rectangle 1/3" thick and spread with cooled date mixture. Roll up for jelly roll and wrap in wax paper. Chill for at least 2 hours. Slice thinly and bake on greased baking sheet at 375º for 10 to 12 minutes.
