Ingredients:
"Soap making now days ranks with the higher domestic arts."

5 lbs. Grease
1 can Lye
1/2 cup Kerosene Oil
1/2 cup Borax
1/2 cup Ammonia
1 oz of Sassafras (for scent)

Directions:
Directions:
Heat and strain grease through filter or cloth. Put lye in 1 quart of warm water in porcelain pot or crock. Let stand until cold.

Put Borax in 1 cup of warm water and add to lye. Put grease mixture in with lye. Stir thoroughly with wooden spoon, until coagulated, about 15 minutes. When it begins to thicken, pour into molds.

A berry lug, lined with wax paper makes a good mold. Cut when cold, before hardened. Completely wrap bars in wax paper and let it stand a week before using.

The longer it stands, the whiter and harder it gets. Don't move it or monkey with it after it starts to get hard or it will separate. Put in cool place after cutting it and leave it alone until completely hard.
