Directions:
Soak the dal in 2 cups of warm water for 10 minutes before cooking. Add chaat masala, turmeric to dal and water mixture and cook in the pressure cooker for 10 minutes or microwave on high for 15 minutes in a covered casserole dish.

In a saucepan, heat the oil and add cumin seeds, garlic and the chillies. When the cumin starts spluttering and the garlic changes color to a light brown pour in the cooked dal. Add tomatoes, 1/2 cup water, salt and garam masala to the dal and bring it to a boil the lower the heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Turn off the heat and garnish the dal with the cilantro and serve.

Chilies: To reduce the spiciness remove the seeds. For the red ones cut the head and remove the seeds. For the green ones cut them lengthwise and remove the seeds. Be careful the spiciness of the chillies varies.
