My mom gave me this recipe, which she remembered as a child, from Schrafft's ice cream shop, where it was served on ice cream with toasted, salted almonds on top. My mom and her brother Peter and sister Frances had it on trips to New York City. Wikipedia reports that Audrey Hepburn can be seen at a Schrafft's ice cream shop in "Breakfast at Tiffanys!" It was also featured in Kramer Versus Kramer when Dustin Hoffman's son defies his order and digs into the ice cream container! Schrafft's was established in 1861 in Charlestown, Boston but by 1915 they had 23 stores in Manhattan and one in Brooklyn.

It is really delicious over ice cream - great for guests if there's not a lot of time to bake.
