6 med fresh turnips
1 med onion, chopped
salt & pepper
Wesson Oil

Directions:
Directions:
Wash and peel turnips, slice thinly. Dice onion. Heat oil in frying pan, add turnips and onions. Fry on med heat until tender. Salt and pepper to taste.

Mom bought Erskine Caldwell’s Tobacco Road and all of us were reading it the same year that Mom planted turnips in her garden. She had a bountiful harvest, and she and daddy were eating turnips almost every meal. They liked them boiled but preferably fried with beans and cornbread. The characters in Tobacco Road, Ader and Jeter, ate turnips all the time. Doug had just read the book and started calling Mom and Dad “Ader” and “Jeter” every time he saw them eating turnips. The nicknames stuck all of these years. All of the grand kids, and now the great grandchildren, call Mom "Granny Ader" and always have.
