Directions:
Rub bacon fat around top of inner rim of a tall 3 to 4 Quart pan. Cook to a hard tread stage (test in cold water). Meanwhile, pop 4 -5 poppers of popcorn. Salt lightly. Sort on paper to cull kernels and place in dishpan. When syrup is ready, add 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda. Stir until soda is absorbed and syrup is very fluffy and add immediately to popcorn, stirring quickly with buttered wooden spoon. Shape into balls while warm.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
This recipe handed down to Chuck Welter from his father-in-law, Floyd Mayne, was a favorite of the Welter children. Oompa and Omi use to make cackerjack balls for the children in the neighborhood at Halloween. Granddaughter, Mackenzie Dotson, remembers the big Cracker Jack cooking attempt in the cottage at Grace Ridge. (look for how to pop popcorn under 'Treats & Snacks) Libby
