Personal Notes:
Emily and I actually bonded over food and wine, mostly whining about work. Before she really even knew me, she invited Chase and me over for dinner. I was a little nervous about going over and wasn't’t quite sure what I should bring or how I should act (considering the slightly awkward circumstances our relationship stemmed from). Mostly, I was anxious because I cannot cook. And not in an “Oh, I can’t cook…” sort of flippant and semi-serious, I mean I really cannot cook. But the moment that Em opened her door, with Charlie and Oscar flooding the walkway with jumps and “growls” and toys in their mouths, she was warm and inviting. I remember sitting in the kitchen, glass of wine in hand, watching her trim chicken. I have never seen anyone trim chicken breasts that had already been “pre-trimmed” like Emily, but I appreciated it because I knew that she really wanted the meal to be great. I offered to help her but she told me to sit and relax, almost as if she knew I was helpless in the kitchen. To be honest, I have learned a lot about cooking from watching Em, and this is something that I truly welcome. All the nights we shared sipping reds and laughing in the kitchen blur together; one night we forgot about the rolls and burned them, another night we attempted grilling an artichoke to no avail, but what I love most about cooking and hanging and well drinking with Emily is that we can chat about nothing and everything – and all of it is important between us.
