1 package active dry yeast
1/4 c. water
1/2 c. milk, scalded
3 T. shortening
3 T. sugar
1/2 t. salt
1 beaten egg
1/2 t. vanilla
3 c. sifted, enriched flour

Directions:
Directions:
Soften yeast in warm water (110º). Combine milk, shortening and salt; cool to lukewarm; add softened yeast. Add egg, reserving 2 teaspoons.
Add vanilla and enough flour to make a smooth, soft dough. Knead lightly on floured surface. Place in greased bowl; turn once to grease surface; cover and let rise till double.
Divide in 2 portions and roll to oblong shape 1/2 inch thick. Brush with melted butter; spread evenly with filling and roll lengthwise as for jelly roll; seal edge.
Shape each roll in a ring on greased cookie sheet. Snip almost to center at 2-inch intervals with scissors. Pull sections apart and twist slightly. Brush with egg you set aside and let rise till very light. Bake in moderate oven (375º) 25 minutes.

Filling: Combine 1/4 c. sugar, 2 t. cinnamon, 3/4 c. chopped walnuts, 3/4 c. chopped, candied fruit peel. (optional)
