Ingredients:
2 1/2 lb. lean hamburger
1 medium onion, chopped
1/2 tsp. salt
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 large can tomato sauce
8 oz. pkg. shredded mozzarella cheese
1 long loaf of crusty French bread or several smaller baguettes

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
In a large heavy skillet, cook the hamburger, onions, salt, and garlic until the hamburger is brown and the onions are tender. Remove from the heat, drain off grease, and set the meat mixture aside.

Cut the bread in half lengthwise and hollow out a "ditch" in both the top and the bottom halves of the bread. Leave the ends closed do not cut them.

Using a blender or food processor, put the bread pieces made when digging out the ditches to make coarse bread crumbs. Add the resulting bread crumbs and tomato sauce to the meat mixture. Stir to mix thoroughly.

Fill the bottom ditch with the meat mixture, mounding and filling the ditch completely. Sprinkle the cheese over the top. Replace the top piece of bread and wrap tightly in aluminum foil.

Place on a cooking sheet and bake for 20 minutes.

Remove from the oven, unwrap the canoes and cut into serving size sandwiches.

Personal Notes:
Good and a relatively easy supper. Serve with potato chips and your favorite dip and vegetable crudites or slaw and homemade potato salad with pepperchini peppers or dill pickle slices on the side.
