2 cups cake flour
2 1/4 tsp. baking powder
3/4 tsp. salt
1 cup plus 2 T. sugar
1/2 cup shortening (or 2/3 cup butter)
2/3 cup milk (if using butter, use slightly less milk)
1 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs unbeaten
1/2 cup fine nuts

Easy Caramel Frosting:
1/2 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
1/4 cup milk
1 3/4 - 2 cups confectioners' sugar
Directions:
Directions:
Sift flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar into mixing bowl. Add shortening and remaining ingredients. Bake in 350º oven 35 to 40 minutes. May be baked in 2 8-inch layer tins or long pan.

Frosting: Melt 1/2 cup butter. Add 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar and cook over low heat for 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Add 1/4 cup milk and continue to cook, stir until mixture comes to a boil. Remove from heat. Cool. Add 1 3/4 to 2 cups confectioners' sugar gradually until desired consistency.
