Ingredients:  
Ingredients:  
1 cup dates chopped
1 1/2 cup boiling water
1 tsp baking soda
Pour water over dates and soda and let cool.

Cream Together:
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
add 2 beaten eggs

Sift together:
1 1/2 cup + 3 T flour
1/4 tsp salt
3/4 tsp baking soda

Add date mixture to sugar/egg and then stir in flour.

Topping to be baked with cake:
1/2 cup sugar
1- 6 oz pkg of chocolate chips
1/2 cup chopped walnuts


Directions:

Pour into 9x13 greased pan
Top with mixture of:
1/2 cup sugar
1- 6 oz pkg of chocolate chips
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Bake 350º 35-40 minutes
