1 c. chopped dates
1 tsp. soda
1 1/2 c. boiling water
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 1/4 c. + 3 T. flour
1/4 tsp. salt
3/4 tsp. soda
1 pkg. chocolate chips
1/2 c. nuts
1/4 c. brown sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Pour boiling water over dates & soda. Let stand until cool. Cream shortening and sugar, add eggs slightly beaten. Add dry ingredients and date mixture alternately. Pour into greased 9 X 12 pan.
Topping: Mix together chocolate chips, nuts and brown sugar. Sprinkle on cake batter and bake at 350º for 30 to 35 minutes. Serve with whipped cream.
